Anomalous Course of Chorda Tympani Nerve: an Operative Finding
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chorda tymapni, branch of facial nerve arising from its vertical segment is at risk throughout its course during middle ear and mastoid surgeries. We observed an unusual course of the nerve during tympanoplasty. Course of nerve was carefully observed and compared with previous studies. This is the first case to best of our knowledge describing such an unusual course of chorda tympani nerve.

ANATOMICAL VARIATIONS OF THE CHORDA TYMPANI NERVE
The author studied anatomical variations of the origin of the chorda tympani nerve from the mastoid portion of the facial nerve. The studies were performed on 200 specimens of human temporal bone. It was found that the chorda tympani may arise from the facial nerve in three levels: most commonly from the mid third of its mastoid segment (70%), less commonly from the proximal third (20%), an...
متن کاملTime course of morphological alterations of fungiform papillae and taste buds following chorda tympani transection in neonatal rats.
The time course of structural changes in fungiform papillae was analyzed in rats that received unilateral chorda tympani nerve transection at 10 days of age. Morphological differences between intact and denervated sides of the tongue were first observed at 8 days postsection, with an increase in the number of fungiform papillae that did not have a pore. In addition, the first papilla with a fil...
متن کاملDissection and Exposure of the Whole Course of Deep Nerves in Human Head Specimens after Decalcification
The whole course of the chorda tympani nerve, nerve of pterygoid canal, and facial nerves and their relationships with surrounding structures are complex. After reviewing the literature, it was found that details of the whole course of these deep nerves are rarely reported and specimens displaying these nerves are rarely seen in the dissecting room, anatomical museum, or atlases. Dissections we...
متن کاملTarget pioneering and early morphology of the murine chorda tympani.
Many studies demonstrate that differentiation of certain sensory receptors during development is induced by their nerve supply. Thus the navigational accuracy of pioneering fibres to their targets is crucial to this process. The special gustatory elements of the facial and glossopharyngeal nerves are used extensively as model systems in this field. We examined the chorda tympani, the gustatory ...
متن کاملTaste damage: previously unsuspected consequences.
Studies using anesthesia provide insights into oral phantoms. The chorda tympani nerve is accessible for anesthesia at two sites. First, the chorda tympani leaves the tongue with the lingual nerve (CN V) and the two travel through the pterygomandibular space. The inferior alveolar nerve, which conveys pain from the lower teeth, passes through the same space; thus dental anesthesia abolishes tas...
